Suisei no Gargantia episode 01

I'm a big fan of Stargate. The whole gating to another world thing just hit with me the moment I watched this first episode. Add in a reverse tarzan story of the advanced man dropping into a crowd of not-so-advanced-people, I was just hooked. Maybe, this was something, a series I have been waiting for for a long time...

In this case though, this isn't like Stargate's gates, but maybe a bit more like the Supergates in the last 2 seasons of Stargate SG-1, something like a way to shorten the distance. In any case, sending a massive fleet through the gate was truly quite a sight, something I always think about, could such a thing be possible in our lifetime? Gating through space :D

I had no idea what I was getting into, I had not seen a single trailer or visited forum threads for this series, I had not seen any picture whatsoever until I saw it at Animetake, and I saw the description and accompanying picture. Since much of my introduction to current seasons start with Animetake, this is one series I'm glad I clicked on. I don't know why it happens like that... I hardly look up this stuff beforehand, very rarely do I do so, it might have to do with that one thing I thought of several years ago, that I like to be surprised once a new season starts. In my experience it worked out so far, and it helps destroy expectations (I should mention one of my favorite Transformers quotes, "expect nothing"). In other cases, it doesn't help the situation where I may end up with a lot to watch, like this season, where everything just so happened to be at the weekends. Bless your heart, Nyaruko XD
Back to the show, the first half shows us a glorious battle between plants and humans. No, not that game Plants Versus Zombies..... I don't mean that ZAFT Plant either :P I'm going to have to call those "Hideous" aliens "plants" because hey, there's a giant flower in space, man. I guess mother nature had it with humanity and figured might as well conquer the universe AND SIT IN FRONT OF A SUN WHILE DOING SO XD Infinite energy! Green energy! Environmentally friendly, gosh I think I'm being sympathetic to those plants already :P

But well, like Stargate showed us, going through the gate isn't always a rosy experience, which throws our protag off course, ya can never trust GPS, ja. The rest of the second half is primitive natives having found his mecha, and try to open it, time to go to sleep, protag decides to recon, oh wait not everyone is asleep, can't help but take a hostage, and the episode ends with the big reveal: he's on.... Uranus :P No wait, that's not the watery planet, is it? Apparently, this series takes place after Roland Emmerich's "2012" movie, I think that's it :D (It's Earth in the above screenshot :P)

All the talk about the scriptwriter has me wary though. Isn't this series starting on the bad ending already? Look at Earth, it's a giant swimming pool, humanity left to seek their Elysium and ran into a plant, which they now have to go all Agent Orange on it. It's starting to look bleak already XD

That certainly was a hilarious moment.
